  1. Manny LaSalle is your man. There was a post recently about Manny (was it reno 101’s???) and there were many people saying the same thing. Manny does this all the time and he could take it apart in pieces and if there is some damage can put it back together for you, but he knows what he is doing. Also putting a mantle back together again is not something that most contractors do all the time — this is what Manny does. This and rebuilding flues and fireplace related masonry. He has a recommendation list as long as your arm. Give him a call.
He put together two fireplaces for me. Everything is great.

  2. We just had our marble mantle moved last weekend and I would strongly recommend Manny Lassalle. He does great work. His number is 917-292-1825. I just put a post on the Forum beginning of this week about Manny. Gook Luck!

  3. Try calling the guys at Build It Green NYC (www.bignyc.org) for advice and maybe they could recco someone to do it at a reasonable price – they have removed a number of these heavy stone mantles for transportation and sale at their Queens warehouse and they always look nice. In any event, if yours breaks irreparably, you can always get a new one cheap from BIGNYC.

  4. I know someone who would happily sell you a parlor quality mantel for around the price of moving and fixing the existing one.

  5. Yeah — my brother moved his marble mantel (well, removed it to do repairs to the firebox and the replaced it). It basically snapped in the middle, but under the center ornament… so he epoxied it back together without taking much care and the ornament covered everything.

I guess that’s sorta lucky though.

  6. It could be danger to move Marble until you have not a good specialist team for this. Having good team decrease the risk. Call some experts for this who complete this task in an easy and clean way.

  7. We moved mantles from a different house to ours – took them off and put them in. We’ve also moved them within a house. It can be done. If something breaks, it can be easily repaired so that it is barely noticeable. SO many old mantles have cracks and breaks in them already, so it may not even be a big deal. We were very please with the results of moving mantles, because we wanted them centered on walls, and in some cases, that isn’t possible unless you move them.

    Good luck

PS. we used Andre who is often mentioned on this board

  8. Jason at Big Apple Chimney installed my marble mantel, and his team did a great job. I think it’s worth some extra expense to get experts to do it.
