Hi. I posted a floor plan earlier today of a studio apartment we are renovating. Currently, the bathroom has a tub in it. We would like to remove the tub and put in a shower (something along the lines of the picture above).

Does anyone see a problem with making this switch? One contractor said no problem. A different contractor said we may have draining problems.

Thoughts?

  1. We are talking about a small bathroom in a small studio apartment. Accordingly, we are not that concerned about kids.

  2. Too bad we can’t just switch. I have a brand new nicely tiled shower only with great fixtures and we need a tub!
It wasn’t a deal breaker because obviously we bought the place anyway, but we really wished they made a tub. I wouldn’t get rid of yours. Kids do need tubs.

  3. You will severely limit your market when you sell. It isn’t only kids who need tubs. Most women want them, too. And while I would renovate, I wouldn’t buy from a seller who took out a basic piece of equipment it would cost me a lot to replace.

  4. Ah, yes. Definitely inappropriate.

How unusual and lovely to see a nice renovation with expensive showerheads and appropriate subway tiles…

  5. Mopar, yes, but being a renter and asking your landlord, who has done an amazing renovation with really, really expensive showerheads and appropriate subway tiles to replace all of their hard work with a tub is… probably inappropriate. I did consider it? They did an amazing renovation. The bathrooms were gorgeous. The showers were gorgeous. But no tub.

And yes, children need tubs. Frankly, so do I.

  6. Heather, it would be relatively easy to add a tub to an apartment. I think. I would estimate $2,000 or $3,000 for materials, labor, permits. Done in a day. Goodness, everything costs a fortune, doesn’t it?
