We have a non-landmarked 4-story brownstone. About 30 years ago, we installed relatively inexpensive (vinyl, I think; definitely not wood) replacement windows. They’re cold, they leak, the gas seal between the panes is gone in some of them. I’m considering replacing them with, probably, vinyl-clad wood windows.

I have seen Adler, EZ-Tilt, and Windows We Are mentioned on blog. Have any of you had personal experience with these companies, good or bad? Or any other company? Also helpful: quesions to ask, things I need to know, when I’m getting estimates.

  1. Hi Silvermax,

I would be more than happy to provide you a list of our most recent customers. I feel this gives my clients a more comprehensive understanding of my Company, and not just exposure to our most successful projects.

    Regards,

  2. We used Bay Ridge windows in ’09 and got Marvin brick to brick. They are beautiful windows and the workers did a great job. The price was high, but that was mainly due to the quality of the windows.

  3. Silvermax, I had a mixed experience with Windows We Are in 2010 – great installation, but astonishingly lousy in every way up to the moment the installers arrived. We had a door installed by Tip Top and they were GREAT. I haven’t done windows with them, but as an organization I can recommend them highly.

  4. Thank you all. I guess I’m not sure about brick to brick v. just replacement, but it sounds like b2b is much better. Annonymous — you can contact me at housereno at earthlink dot net.

  5. We had a general contractor replace our cheap windows with Marvin windows last year, brick to brick. He and his crew did a nice job throughout and made aesthetic adjustments when I asked. There was a delay in starting the job but that’s because Marvin shipped the windows in two separate shipments. Windows look great and really keeps the cold (and some noise) out for a change. Windows and job was not cheap but within the range of what this would cost (based on other quotes). We are not landmarked btw. Also had the front door replaced by them and that turned out the way we wanted, except we should’ve chosen a different door to better balance the superior sound reduction of the Marvin windows. Contractor advised us on that but we didn’t have the budget for the better door. Next time…

Contractor’s name is Mike Sheehan, 917-626-1254. He can show you our windows (and other examples of work) if you like.

So you don’t have to go with a “window vendor” for the job if they don’t have a good track record. Just a thought. Good luck in any case.

  6. EZ Tilt (aka Historical Windows of NY) replaced all my windows last year. Excellent job. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

You need to be clear on whether you are getting quotes on a full brick to brick install or a replacement window (which sits inside the existing frame). Brick to brick is more expensive, but worth it because the seal around the frame is going to be much better, and you get more glass, which looks nicer. Make sure your quote includes any options you want related to hardware, etc. Those can add up.

  7. Bay Ridge Window is coming out tomorrow to give an estimate. Fingers crossed. Won’t do the windows until it warms up. Will let you know how that goes (if I remember).

  8. To the original poster: I’d be pleased to share my recent window experience with you, but not in a public forum.
Please give an email address at which you can be contacted.

  9. hi….i’m currently dealing with windows we are on our house.
people seem to have recommended them alot on this site…but that might have been
a long time ago. i’m not having the best experience with them now but am still in the
middle of the job so i don’t want to say anything just yet.
