The House I bought has a huge old tree in the backyard that hasn´t seen a lot of love in the last years.

It looks like one half of the tree is dead.
Any recommendations what to do?

  1. Joe from Family Tree Service gave me a quote last week.
There are actually 3 trees in the picture. He said they need to be pruned and one should be cut down. The price is reasonable for the amount of work and I feel confident that they´ll do a good job.

  2. be aware that if more than 1/3 of the tree is sick and has to be removed it may die. A tree , a plant all have limited lives. If the tree is leaning it may have root damage. The other question is it getting enough water and nutrients. Have more than one Tree service look at it, make sure the service person is an arborist if not seek out an arborist the brooklyn or bronx Botanical gardens will help you in finding someone. Good luck

  3. Yes. Get a professional. Also look at the base of the trunk. Our neighbor had a similar situation and it turned out to be “die back” caused by piling dirt too high around the base of the trunk. When they did a proper pruning and some excavation at the base to create a bed at the proper elevation the tree began to thrive.

  4. Augustiner, about the neighbors…..there is nothing like a big tree to get to know your neighbors. I have a huge Norway maple which spreads over 7 properties. It can be trying at times. You need to be on top of these trees and have a tree company come in regularly to prune. Then you will reduce greatly the chances of having accidents during storms. THe last thing you want is for someone to get hurt.

  5. Ok thank you, I will call Family Tree Service. The left side looks pretty dead and I would feel better if someone with a clue takes a look at it. I am sure it will make me popular with my new neighbours 🙂

  6. Yeah, you need to get a tree service over there and get it trimmed. The best out there in terms of competance and cost is Family Tree Service. Call information. They are based in Staten Island but work a lot in Brooklyn. Very responsive, punctual, professional and good cost.

  7. Your tree looks like all the tree in the backyards of our block and ours look that way because of the tornado in September. Stripped and broken and uneven with some dead branches hanging off.
