(I will not be using siding between the bays) I’d like something that looks good and lasts a long time/doesn’t require major maintenance. Any recommendations?
Azek is solid PVC. There are also other brands besides Azek. If you’re cool with using PVC on your house then it can’t be beat for longevity and durability. I think they sell it at Lowes too.
All of the contractors who quoted a job for us spec’d AZEK for use with Hardiplank. People seem to like it.
Azek.
I agree with not using finger-jointed boards. They are not worth the cost savings and show the joints after a few years.
There are a number of different man-made products out there that work well. Just be sure to caulk any joits and butts.
Azek trimboards seem to be well-reviewed by people in the trade. They allegedly take paint as well, although I have no experience with that aspect of the product.
I’ll say this: DO NOT use the pre-primed finger-jointed trimboards that are branded as ‘Windsor One’ as they won’t last a week past their warranty period. They claim to be weatherproof when all cuts are primed but my experience was otherwise and a quick web search will back me up. Avoid them at all costs.
With regard to molding you might be able to find the profiles you need in synthetic as well. Otherwise triple-prime with an oil-based penetrating primer and use drip-cap flashing wherever possible.
