Removing paint from cast iron fireplace cover
Hi stoners! Does anyone have any tips for removing paint from cast iron fireplace cover? I am thinking a heatgun could do this?

I really appreciate any leads! thanks!

  1. I used paint stripper and a putty knife to get the majority of it off. Then another coat of stripper and a large wire brush. Then another coat of stripper and a (corded) drill fitted with a medium cup brush. After it’s all done you’ll need to coat it with something; I used a clear coat lacquer. Otherwise it’ll rust.

Also: prepare yourself- it’s an awful, tedious and messy job.

  2. I had mine sand blasted followed by powder coating. Came out beautifully.

Evernu does a great job. Not cheap, but boy the fireplace pieces all turned out beautiful.

  3. Can’t you just boil it in baking soda and water on the stove? (In a big pot you will never use again.)

  4. The cast iron will be absorbing and dissipating the heat before it acts on the paint.

Having gone the stripper, scrapper, small wire brush route I would suggest trying another method. I stripped a lot of paint from a lot of surfaces but the fp grills were the worst. It splatters as you wire brush it and neutralizing with water rusts it.

If I were doing it again (and I’m not) I would try the dipping idea or peel-away.
