I will be doing a minor expansion of kitchen + balcony + basement digout in a few months in a one-family, two-story house. Everything is being done legally and plan has already been approved by the DOB.

I have been told by my architect that I need to hire an engineer for the finals plans.

I have interviewed one and his price quote of $2,200 seems to be high and I am not sure I was impressed by his approach in telling me that he would have to charge me every time he would have to come down to inspect the work being done.

So, can someone please recommend a good NYC licensed engineer?

My work is to be done in Bay Ridge Brooklyn.

  1. rowhouse or freestanding?

    I know a good engineer for a dollar…works out of a
3’x5′ table in front of DOB bklyn..(also sells phone chargers)

  2. Are you looking for an engineer for structural or for special inspection reports ? doesn’t sound high regardless.

  3. this is who we used for our building addition: http://blueskydsgn.com/ Lots of steel, knocking out back wall, etc. My architect got three bids from engineers he’d worked with in the past, and this is the one we chose. We were satisfied, but all our dealings with them were through the architect. That’s why I suggest you ask your architect for recommendations as well.

  4. Yes, I am looking for a structural engineer. Would like to shop around and hear from others please.

  5. Doesn’t seem high to me. Your architect should know the appropriate engineer to contact. Sounds like you might need a structural engineer if you’re doing a basement digout and expansion of kitchen and balcony.
