Hi,
Any advice about refurbishing pocket window shutters. Some are coated in layers of paint (I will probably have these stripped. Any recs of where to go?) But my bigger concern is that some slats are missing and many of the small metal pieces holding slats are broken. Am I crazy to think that I could repair these myself?

  1. Thank you for your extremely helpful suggestions. Looks like I have my work cut out for me, but it will be great to have working shutters!

  2. We had the shutters dipped at Park Slope Paint Strippers for $100 a book (2007 prices). We then sanded and finished the shutters ourselves, and they look and operate perfectly.
We were missing some of the hardware, but last month I was able to find antique knobs (perfect match) and antique latches (period authentic) at historichouseparts.com . They also have Victorian reproductions which look great.
It took me three years to find what I needed, so don’t get discouraged. The stuff is out there, you just have to persevere. It sounds like you need hinges as well, so look them up. The other site I had success with is Charleston Hardware, they have both antique and reproduction items.
    Good luck

  3. one of my neighbors did this and between restoration hardware (manhattan) and lowes they were able to get the hardware to repair them. Im sure a cabinet maker could make you replacement slats out of oak or poplar
