  1. I’m the first to admit that I’m cheap SteamMan, but my old Lennox furnace was tested at 74 percent efficency, works fine, and gives me heating bills lower than most of my neighbors. On top of that, my service contract with National Grid will pay for any needed parts. Eventually the heat exchanger will rust out, which will necessitate a replacement, but until then I doubt that a new furnace would be cost effective. Who knows, my present furnace might outlast me. Considering that a high efficency furnace would probably not be practicable (due to the difficulty of venting one in a rowhouse) could a new furnace pay (over a period of 10, or so years?

BTW, my furnace’s pilot light has never blown out, even once, in the 36 years I’ve owned my house, but the electronic igniters for the burners, oven, an broiler on my gas range have had to be replaced several times and are not cheap, I WISH had pilot lights on that.

  2. Thank you architect66.

@bobmarvin – Standing pilots suck. They waste gas and bring down AFUE by 1%-3%. Not to mention they blow out. The main reason your furnace has lasted 45 years is that you are a cheapskate. It’s time to upgrade….

    Man, I think I’m channeling e-man today ;P

  3. When energy usage becomes a national security issue, I think the government is obliged to take steps to mitigate waste.

When our the air in our cities is so choked with smog, it’s time for the government to step in.

When our rivers catch fire, the government needs to say, this can’t happen again.

When the Gowanus Canal is about to be turned into a luxury waterfront development, thank God the government said, “No.”

I believe in our capitalist system, but sometimes humans get overcome with greed, sloth and stupidity….
