Tipping etiquette question: My friend lives in a Brooklyn building where her super is also her landlord. She’s tipped supers in larger buildings in the past, but it seems strange to tip the same guy she pays rent to. I advised a small gift or bottle of wine would be OK in this situation. Anyone disagree?

  1. You tip them every month when you pay your rent on time. If he gives you a sour puss them toss him one of those God awful fruit cakes that make the rounds every year as a re-gift:)

  2. BH — I live just north at the Cortelyou stop. And I prefer circumcision in a hospital performed by a doctor.

  3. For what it’s worth, I do tip my hairdresser/salon owner, because I started seeing him when he worked somewhere else, and I would feel weird stopping.

But having been in your friend’s situation, I never would have thought to tip my landlord/super, and we never exchanged gifts (except one time when he went home to Jamaica, when I got a bottle of white rum out of the deal. Yowza.)

  4. My worst tenant ever gave me a gift of “Moby Dick”. Not sure what she had in mind. My best tenant ever gave me a little hippo and a reproduction egyptian plaque from the Met. Not sure what she had in mind either, but they’re among my favorite tchochkas.

The best gift you can give your landlord is don’t be a jerk, and walk up the stairs quietly. Season’s greetings!

  5. If the landlord is also the super, it’s their only building and a small building I would tip.

  6. tybur6 – been looking for you today. Yesterday I went to a Bris around Newkirk Ave – is that your Q train stop?

    Nice nabe!

  7. You don’t tip the person who is directly profiting from your business… simple as that. You don’t tip your hairdresser if she/he owns the place.

I personally think tipping is out of hand. I don’t think my tip/card for the porter of my building went over very well (saw him in the hall today — tipped him yesterday, he gave me a half-hearted “hi boss” — usually more enthusiastic). But whatever. I don’t really care. I don’t have a lot of money. What’s he gonna do? Stop taking out the garbage? Not vacuum in front of my apartment door?
