sorry forgot to add picture.

Hi, I have basement room with 7’10” ceilings. I want to put light in a box around the perimeter of the room. Basically I will build a 8″x8″ box (as depicted on the picture) and put recessed lights to light the wall and another lights to defuse light from the ceiling. Normally it would be luminescent 4′ bulbs. But we really hate luminiscent lights. So is there any alternatives for the diffused lights?

In general, does this idea makes sense?

  1. thank everybody for valuable info. I will try fluorescent bulbs.

I have tried LED Philips “candle” bulbs in the chandelier … just once. It looked spooky even for Halloween. If I will try LED bulbs again, my wife will poison my eta.

  2. Be careful with your dimensions…as you’ve drawn this, you’ll see the top of each can…and these are not usually meant for viewing. So you’ll either need to adjust the dimensions to cover the cans, or find shallower cans.

  3. By “luminiscent” I’m assuming fluorescent. If that’s the case, fluorescents have gotten a bad rap in the past because of their poor light quality and color rendition. Recently, fluorescents are being made with much more natural light characteristics. They really are the perfect light for what you’re describing, so I’d say go to a good lighting store/showroom and ask to see a display of different color fluorescents. You’ll see that there’s a huge difference between the old cool-white and newer warm-white or daylight lamps.

Other alternatives would be more expensive LED’s or halogen/xenon bulbs which get really hot.
