After restoring the removed original railings which I found rotting in the basement I’m ready to refinish them. Since they have been extensively patched and Bondo-ed stain is not an option. Has anyone re-finished their railings themselves using faux painting techniques they’d like to share? I’d like to get them a very dark brown with a high gloss finish.
No, I used latex. You could use either. Experiment with the amount of finishes on some scrap until you have the look you want.
DIBS,the base coat and black streaks are oil base?
I woodgrained mine. I’ve done this before. Paint a base coat of medium brown and then go over it sparingly with black streaks. Then a few coats of high gloss polyurethane stain in a reddish mahogany color. It’ll look like a deep mahogany.
