After restoring the removed original railings which I found rotting in the basement I’m ready to refinish them. Since they have been extensively patched and Bondo-ed stain is not an option. Has anyone re-finished their railings themselves using faux painting techniques they’d like to share? I’d like to get them a very dark brown with a high gloss finish.

  1. No, I used latex. You could use either. Experiment with the amount of finishes on some scrap until you have the look you want.

  2. I woodgrained mine. I’ve done this before. Paint a base coat of medium brown and then go over it sparingly with black streaks. Then a few coats of high gloss polyurethane stain in a reddish mahogany color. It’ll look like a deep mahogany.
