I am installing a new iron deck and it will need to be painted. Does anyone have a suggestion as to the best primer to use on bare metal. Also I will be using both gloss and flat paint on parts of the fence and again I can use some suggestion for paint type and brand that will hold up over time.
Thank you

  1. I used Janovic’s metal primer (it was a red oxide as mentioned above) and urethanized exterior paint years ago and it held up very well. Another top coat I used just a few years ago was Ox-Line. I liked the way it went on and looked, but am not yet sure how durable it is (time will tell).

Rustoleum makes some good metal primers – both for rusty metal and clean metal.

Years ago I had used something from Pittsburgh Paints (PPG) and thought it was a superior product. If I had to to something again, something new, from start-to-finish, I would check out PPG. Their products tend to be used more by professionals and I would venture to say even industrial.

  2. I would not recommend using any of the newer paint + primers, ESPECIALLY for exterior metal.

Look for a zinc chromate or red oxide based primer. Use an oil based color coat. These are available in various brands at home centers and hardware stores and paint stores. Weinstein’s is good if there’s one near you.

  3. There is a Benjamin Moore black metal paint which is paint plus primer. You can get flat black or high gloss. The flat has a shine when you first put it on but fades.
