We recently had a new gas boiler installed in our 2-family house as part of renovation, and it keeps shutting itself off. We keep flipping the sensor switch on the back – sometimes it will stay on for a few days and others it will shut off immediately. I already checked the two posts below:

http://bstoner.wpengine.com/forum/archives/2009/12/raise_my_chimne.php#comments.

We had both A+A and Big Apple come by, per Master Plvmber, with mixed results. A+A said the chimney was “ugly but fine,” while Big Apple requested $500 in cash to clean the chimney and look inside (the cash part made it sound a little shady). We have a metal chimney and the house does not use the original chimney.

Since we closed in the summer and did not turn the heat on until after the new boiler was installed, we can’t compare it to last winter.

Can anyone recommend another chimney company for a third opinion? Is there a way to check to see if the sensor is broken? (and if so, I assume the contractor who installed it is responsible for fixing it?) Is there a way to test for carbon monoxide in the basement? Could wind blowing in the top of the chimney be to blame?

He did install a very large boiler – apparently larger than we need. Could that be the problem?

We want to get this resolved before we finish reno and get a renter in. Thanks in advance for any tips!

  1. Hey Owl, I have the same problem in my Harlem brownstone. Have you resolved the problem? If so what was the fix, cost and who did the job? Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  2. Thanks, all, and eman and MP for your feedback! MP- I read elsewhere on this forum that you no longer service Bed Stuy. Is that correct? I hope not – would love to have your guys come out and take a look. eman, I will email you separately.

  3. I used Tommy from PSI Mechanical (917) 907-2315 recently. Very reliable/reasonable charge. Fixed my boiler but it was a problem with water in the tank, not venting. I got his number from this site a while back.

  4. But if A&A says the chimney is “ugly but fine”, I’m sure he means it was drafting well at least while he was there. So if the chimney shows the ability to work, I’d look at deficiencies in make up air or something going on in the home like an oversized kitchen exhaust that is used intermittently….
I’m spitballing here, but that’s my process.

Hope you have a great New Year’s Eve tonight.

  5. mp…if the lower chimney was inspected by either of the outfits mentioned, then I am guessing that the installer downsized the vent off the boiler…thats why I have to look at it first.. a lot of low end boiler installs do not even bother to look at the chimney when they do a plug and play install, much less reconfigure the header and near piping
