My kids go to school in Downtown Brooklyn/Ft. Greene & we are looking to rent a 2BR for $2,500 or less. Safety & parking are our big concerns. Which nabe nearby would you look in?

  1. I just want to share with you Lolly the website I found that could really help you determine if a particular city or state is safe or not. This is the one that I’m using whenever I travel to another city or state. This website shows the crimes and also the sex offenders in a certain area. You can check on their website to find out more about it: http://safekidzone.com/.

  2. Well people like to trumpet their own hood and I don’t think there are a lot of Wburgers here (could be wrong).

Also, probably not the best kid hood (could be wrong).

  3. wow, the anti-williamsburg bias is strong here. williamsburg near the G train (Lorimer stop) is very safe and has 2BR in that range. also, greenpoint along the G is very safe and has apts in that range. parking is doable in both these areas. they also have pretty good schools to boot.

  4. I live two blocks East of Pratt, been there for 6 years. The B-54 bus takes you right to downtown, or you have the G train that will connect you to the A. Fort Greene park is a quick walk away and you get better value for you money. Amazing how the neighborhood has changed. On street parking is easy too.

  5. I recently moved to Ditmas Park from PS, lived in WT before that. Parking is WAY easier in Ditmas, and I take my son to school on the Q each morning, which is pretty civilized (Dekalb Ave stop may/may not be convenient for you). I occasionally drive to school and come home, b/c it is so easy to park when I get back at 8:30-9 AM (imagine doing that in park slope). WT parking can be rough, but I second the other positive comments. Parking in Prospect Heights is a nightmare b/c alternate side parking is twice as frequent as neighboring PS, and it is equally choked with cars. Ditmas/VF feels safe and is safe (apologies to the brownstoner poster who always tries to scare away the yuppies). You can do pretty well for a 2BR at 2,500/mth; but a decent place won’t go much less.

  6. traditionalmod there is some base risk of living in nyc. No one is really far enough from a project or subway stop to remove themselves from it. Carry pepper spray and focus on the positive.

  7. Parking is difficult in all areas around downtown Brooklyn/Ft. Greene. Safety is good in Carroll Gardens.
