Greetings, neighbors of ours are befuddled by an issue with their new zoned heating system.
Recently they had an interior renovation that included the removal of their traditional radiators/hot water system to a “kick heater” system that is zone based and is low profile (as it is installed at the base of floors, under cabinets, etc. with fans pushing heat out to the floors, then the heat rises.
The GC who installed the system is from Long Island, where he said these were standard in many of the new homes they build. Unfortunately he is MIA (big surprise) and they have been unable to find a heating company that can help them fix the system (let alone ever hearing of them) in Brooklyn.
First, can anyone elaborate on this heating system?
Second, does anyone know a NYC based heating contractor they could call who may have knowledge of this system?
I’m trying to help out 🙂
Thanks to all, fwd the info to our neighbors.
Here is an excert from “the Kicker” installation instructions. (from Slant/Fin)
“Operation
1. Press top of toggle switch for high-speed fan
operation and bottom of switch for low fan speed.
The center position of the switch shuts the fan off.
2. Note that to prevent air drafts, The Kicker’s fan
turns on only when hot water is circulating through its
coil. The circulation of hot water is generally
controlled by the space thermostat. If water is
circulating through the coil but the fan does not turn
on, the boiler water temperature must be raised. The
fan is activated when the temperature control senses
that the water circulating through the coil is at a
temperature of at least 130°F to 140°F.
3. When the fan is on, room air enters the left side of
the grille and heated air is discharged into the
room from the right side.”
Raise the temp. of the boiler water. if the water is not at temp. the fan will not turn on. Good Luck.

aj, what exactly is wrong? Are the fans not working or is the water not circulating or is the water not being heated?
Not here, AJ…in MA.
Why are there so many stories like this?
