I am looking for suggestions for someone who can cut off approx 4″x4″ from the sides of my 1″ thick marble mantel ledge so that the ledge is flush with the vertical sides of the surround. I am having bookshelving built and these pieces that jut out would interfere with the bookshelves. See the photo attached.Maybe this is stone masonry? Don’t know term exactly so I put this in “marble” category.
Thank you.

  1. Um I mean Greek Revival. That thing that came after Federal. Tiles appear to have been added later.

  2. Alternatively, you could extend the chimney breast so it is even with the mantle.

Maybe look around a bit, see if you can figure out how this was done originally.

I have never seen a mantle quite like this one. Looks like Neo-Grec and very nice.

  3. Thanks, I will look for Manny.
The marble isn’t as bad as photo in reality. The blue tiles however totally clash. however, I’m a mosaic artist and I use stone, so I have plans for the future of this surround anyway. Yes, you can clean marble in place, however, if it’s in really bad shape, some stains cannot be removed.
    Thanks again for the input.

  4. it looks like your marble has seen better days and needs a polish, is this possible to do in place?

we have a fireplace that is now ornamental and at some stage someone painted it but it’s been partially cleaned now, wondering about costs to bring it back to condition.

  5. Manny LaSalle. You’ll find his name here somewhere. Everyone recommends him (including me).
