I have read through the archives but still have questions about windows.

1) when seeking approval for window replacements in a landmark district who files? Do we need to hire an architect? It is only two windows.

2) if we decide to restore rather than replace, does this require approval

3) do the windows get removed for restoration and if so, what do you do when there are no windows (probably naive question…)

Thanks very much.

  1. 1) An architect does not need to file the application because the application, in the end, is not going to the DOB (unlike, say, a rooftop addition). You, a window manufacturer, or a preservation consultant on your behalf could file the application so long as all of the drawing and other requirements are met.

    2) Most window repairs and storm windows do not require LPC approval.

    3) When windows are removed for restoration the contractor most likely will close up the opening with a sheet of plywood.

You can find details on your fist and second questions on the LPC’s website. I’ve posted links here before too.
