Some damage was recently done to a wood column in our apartment. Any suggestions on fixes would be greatly appreciated

  1. thanks for the suggestions! we are going to sand it and stain so it looks like it has been there forever.

  2. …if you decide to sand it, then use a white vinegar/steel wool solution and lightly soak the newly sanded area. Will give it a similar aged look.

  3. IMBY’s idea is a good one too. will cost a little more, but… the wood column is Long Leaf Pine. You could probably obtain a cut off of the same from M.Fine Lumber/ NY Timber. The carpenter would cut out a smooth rectangle (with dovetail – optional) and glue in the replacement.

  4. You could try a shallow dutchman patch with similar wood… Carpenters will know. Otherwise just leave it alone.

  5. chisel some of the deep cuts and then sand it smooth – ish. It is a flaw that will gain its own beauty. Dave is right in not trying to hide it

  6. Well, you can’t fill it because it would just look like that, a patch, rather unsightly. I’d “distress” it. get a heavy chain and start banging it a bit. Also, you could “fire” some of it with a blow torch and that’ll produce a distressed look as well.
