What would be a good lighting for large basement room. The ceiling is ~8′ high. It has two large windows. I though about recessed lighs but I also hear that scone lights will reflect of the ceiling and make ceiling look higher. Should I go with both scones and recessed. Any other approaches?

Finally I will use http://www.soundproofing.org/sales/SSP.htm to soundproof the ceiling. Do I need to attach the recessed fixtures to the joists or to the Sheetrock (so to reduce sound transmission).

  1. Recessed lights will seriously compromise your soundproofing unless you build and airtight double layered sheetrock box around a Type IC fixture. ANY hole in your ceiling is a problem for soundproofing

  2. Agree with cmu. You can use a variety of lights on the ceiling, walls, lamps. Regular flush-mount ceiling fixtures are fine in low ceilinged rooms.

  3. Recessed fixtures are not great lighting anyway, and if the ceiling is low, are intrusive. Wall sconces would seem the better way. Install just enough for ambient light, and use floor/table lamps additionally. A range of lighting is the key to get the right mood.
