I have a gas-fired boiler in a multi-family that is coming on for heat in the summer! I have disconnected the Heat-Timer to rule that out. The boiler is not flooded and the aquastat (it has a coil) seems to be working properly. I’m stumped as to what might be going on.

  1. That’s all totally possible and even probable. Coils get gunked up with all kinds of crud and eventually should all be replaced.
Also, the aquastat is still a mechanical switch with movement that will eventually and slowly fail.

  2. might also be the relay sticking in the closed position…next time it starts making heat check out the continuity on the break side of the aquastat

  3. Is it possible the cut out feature hasn’t completely failed but is faulty? I ask because it doesn’t do this every cycle. Another thought I had is that the outer aquastat probe(the casing part) that goes into the coil could be totally mineralized on the outside interfering with heat transference. However if that were the case I would also assume the coil itself would be as bad yet it seems to be operating normally.

  4. the cut out on the aquastat has failed, or it would not be making steam

  5. You said the aquastat seems to be working properly. What makes you say that? I’m thinking it’s failed.

  6. Wiring hasn’t been changed in years and this is a new problem. It does have a cutin/cutout aquastat. Any other ideas??

  7. sounds like it cuts in on the aquastatat calling for hot water and cuts out on the pressuretrol steam limit….miswired.. should have cutin/cutout aquastat to control coil temp

  8. sorry…just noticed the coil…definitely sounds like a wiring problem

  9. is there an indirect hot water zone?…if so, sounds like a wiring problem w/relay or aquastat
