My boyfriend is looking into moving into an apartment on Wyckoff Ave near the Dekalb Ave/L train subway stop. I’ve read a lot about the area, and have heard that some parts of Buskwick are okay, while others can be incredibly dangerous. I’m very concerned about our safety, especially because he works a lot at night and would often be coming home at 2 or 3 in the morning.

The plus side: his building is nice and he’s literally steps away from the subway. But with everything I’ve heard about the area and gangs riding the L train, I’m still very concerned.

So my two questions:

1. How safe is this particular part of Bushwick?

2. How safe is the L train at night?

  1. i own in bushwick. am really glad that i bought here. it’s a real nyc neighborhood. there is a coop in the process of being started http://www.bushwickfoodcoop.org. there are three little farmers markets. new businesses opening up at a reasonable pace. everyone i met has been invested in creating a community. there is a lot to the grass roots arts, music, food and activism scene here. it’s a gem and i wish you all the best!!! i’m down on bushwick and greene…on the j, which is supposed to be not as safe as the L, but i have never had a problem.

  3. gangs riding the L train…Warriors style? Now that’s a new one. Not saying gang members dont ride trains. Everyone has to get somewhere. But seriously. THat sounds so overblown.

  4. By the way, that particular area of Bushwick is the “safest.” It is the most residential with the most people around.

  5. I lived at the Bushwick Dekalb L train stop for a couple of years, and moved to Bed Stuy in November. I loved Bushwick. It’s incredibly safe. Great, vibrant neighborhood.

That said, I would not take the train home late at night past the hour when there are people are the street, which is usually 10 pm on weeknights and 11 or or so on weekends.

I don’t think Bushwick is unusual in this respect, I wouldn’t do this anywhere. However, that said, it is the case that there are men (not necessarily who live in Bushwick) who walk around with a baseball bat looking to stun someone unconscious in the wee hours of the morning in Bushwick. I’m not saying it happens frequently but it happened to someone I know (he brandished a pipe and the guy ran off). It also happened famously to someone who wrote about the experience in NY Magazine.

I always take a taxi home late at night.

There are guys in Bushwick who work until 2 or 3 am who take the L train home to Canarsie and they say it’s perfectly safe. There are groups of guys who work in Manhattan and take a cab home together to Bushwick at 2 am.

I don’t know what to tell you. I don’t think it’s safe to ride the train anywhere in NYC at 2 am. I am a woman, by the way.

  6. right off the morgan stop there’s always people and restaurants and galleries that are open. it’s a lot of fun. good luck.

  7. I remember Bushwick when it was notable for burned-out buildings (a lot of it was destroyed in the 1977 blackout) and packs of wild dogs – things have changed! I’d say your biggest danger in Bushwick today is bed bugs – although all of Brooklyn is far ahead of the other boroughs in bed bug complaints, and Bushwick (CD4) isn’t even number one in that anymore – that honor now belongs to CD14 (Flatbush/Midwood) according to HPD statistics for FY2010 (ended June 30).

  8. Wow, thank you all so much for the comments. I don’t know much about the area firsthand, so this definitely puts my mind at ease. Thanks again.
