We are crying “uncle” on cleaning up the disaster in the backyard of our rental following the storm. It seems every neighbors tree top ended in our yard.

Who can we call to clean this up?
We have lots and lots of big limbs that needed cutting to fit through the house and bags and bags and bags worth of leaves.

Our landlord asks us to take care of stuff and take it off the rent.

  1. Just wanted to chime in about Urban Arborist — they are _profoundly_ disorganized and seem to suffer from very high office turnover.

After repeatedly sending me the wrong proposal, over the course of which at least one person left the company and another started, I finally hired them to remove the stump left by the city and plant a new tree. The city, however, ended up removing the stump (and doing some unexpected sidewalk repairs) but Urban Arborists tried to charge me for the stump removal as well.

Then, less than a month after receiving the revised invoice, I got one of the nastiest bill collection notices I’ve ever received, threatening to put a lien on our building if not paid within two days.

I will not be doing business with Urban Arborist ever again.

  2. I second Family Tree Service. I called them the day after the storm, received a call-back within the hour, got an estimate on Tuesday and the limbs were removed on Thursday in a very professional way. Both our yard and the neighbor’s driveway were cleaned with a leaf blower when the job was done. Highly recommended. By the way, thank you DIBS for the original recommendation.

  3. I don’t think the taking it out of rent is crazy. At our last place, the LL’s lived out of the country (and this apartment was their home here when they come back) and they often asked us to take care of things since they are so far away. We would have appliances fixed, plumbers in for problems, etc. and just email a copy of the receipts to the LL and take it out of next rent. We never had a problem with this and they were glad to have tenants take care of things.

No help on who to call, though.

  4. I had good experience with Urban Arborists, but I have to say that scheduling was a little crazy, but maybe that is the nature of the beast, but the office was a little chaotic. Very professional guys in terms of the work though.

But the guys I really liked for professionalism and price was Family Tree Service based in Staten Island.

It is a very big job to do what you are doing. Cover yourself, ala Vinca’s advice, and use this to get something you want/need out of her. She is asking you to do an enormous amount of work. Very disruptive work. Maybe you can get a new paint job, something…. She shoud recognize what good tenants you are.

  5. We just got a bunch of estimates and Dragonetti had the best price for tree removal. They’re recommended elsewhere on this blog.

  6. Even though you’ve done this in the past with the landlord I advise against it. Your landlord should handle this as the possible negatives to arise from this do not outweigh any benefits.

  7. Thank you for all of the really helpful tips.

I know the landlord part is crazy but we have been doing this for a few years. We are actually sending her photos and the cost first so she will pay this upfront this time around. And the advice around a bonded service is excellent.
