I need to replace my late 80s home depot entry door with double entry doors like the originals. Also need casing. A neighbor said it would probably cost $25,000. Is that right?

  2. I just saw your post and wanted to say that i have some original double entry doors (from an 1870s Italiante Brownstone) that I want to sell. I’ll have to get the dimensions but I think they’re around 10 feet. They are fairly simple, square top, carved oak, glass transom. 3. Your choices are salvage, off the shelf new replacement doors, and custom made new doors. The former two will be a few thousand including installation and door surrounds. The latter can indeed run $20,000 to $30,000 or so.

If you have arched gothic doors, your choices are more limited.

If you search the Forum, you will see Dave (as in DaveInBedStuy) wonderfully upgraded his entrance with off-the-shelf new replacement doors for a few thousand.

  4. Professional door maker here.No one can tell you definitively how much it will cost to reproduce your doors without actually looking at them. There are too many factors to consider, and no two brownstone doors are identical (unless they are side by side).

  5. I was going to have new doors made like the original double doors. I’m going to paint them so expensive wood not necessary. They are not super intricate. Just your basic double doors with glass and a transom, no curves. The biggest deal, I think, will be the casing. I was thinking about trying to find some used doors, but since I also need the whole casing constructed, thought it would be better to do as one job. But am starting to think I may need to approach this differently.

  6. Good point, we don’t know the details of your project. Size, design and period details are all factors determining the cost. If you are going for a high quality, exact reproduction, It can be costly. However, refinished salvage doors can cost under $5,000.

  7. what southslope says, 25k does not sound out of line for custom made brownstone doors installed. Imagine the skill and labor needed to fabricate them from scratch.

No one can tell you definitively how much it will cost to reproduce your doors without actually looking at them. There are too many factors to consider, and no two brownstone doors are identical (unless they are side by side).

For example: I have a single door in my shop right now that is for a very high profile (very unique) property in Manhattan that is north of $50,0000. However most brownstone entry doors in Brooklyn are between $10K – $20K (typical double leaf 10′ tall doors). There are many, many factors that affect the price: species of wood, style of door, finish, enframement included or not, mouldings, landmark, etc.)

It is unlikely that you will find the original doors for your property in a dumpster or salvage yard. That is why custom costs more.
