I need to get some moulding cut to match others in my home. Can Dykes do that kind of thing, or is there a specialist for that, and who would they be, exactly? Tx!

  1. Responding to smeyer418: It is only considered shilling when you pretend to be someone else and, in fact, are “recommending” yourself. These are the people who pretend to be satisfied customers. To represent yourself as yourself and offer expert advice is very welcome and is honest.

  2. Well, I am one of those long time participants on this board who feels like the shilling is definitely getting out of hand! What JimHill says about obnoxious, greedy contractors posing as grateful consumers is seriously noted and agreed.

Smeyer, there are folk like Masterplumber, JimHill, Jockdbeiera, Steve (Tinkerswagon), Bond, Eman, Rick, AdamHill, and so many other great contractors and vendors who, as they participate on this forum, will let us know in a variety of ways they own a relevant business. Then there are the blatant shillers. The former are of a group of people who frequently share their expert advice and opinions with us for free . As such, I view their free contribution of earned knowledge to the group as a value added to most conversations. OTOH, there are the straight out shillers who contribute nothing to this board except a whole lot of spam! Instead of bringing any real information and clarity to our discussions, they just pile on their contact information and make claims of greatness. Way too often, they attempt to mask their self-promotions by claiming to be consumers amongst us who have used their services. This is getting tired.

While I know everyone needs to make a living, especially in this economy, how is blatant shilling without some kind of pro bono giveback to the larger community to be encouraged over those who just pony a modest fee in order to have their businesses advertised in the directory?

Sorry for the rant. And, Miamigirl — please know that these comments are not intended to be construed as an attack on your post re Rob Parson. As a fellow consumer, welcome to the board!

  3. That’s great. Thank you for the info. Hopefully Mr. Parson will get some work out of this exchange.

  4. nothing wrong with shilling in response to a request for information or request for assistance. People do it on this site all the times(master plumber and various architects).
sometimes the people who know are the people who do.

  5. Well, if that’s the case I probably should have kept my thoughts to myself, and I owe you an apology.

There are occasional posts from vendors here, pretending to be customers making recommendations, and usually the hallmark of such things is the type of consistency shown in your posts. I usually don’t call it out, but your posts seemed too similar and closely posted to ignore.

As a long time member of this community, yes I do promote myself, but never in a dishonest way. People come to this community for honest, unbiased reviews, and it’s important to me that we keep it that way.

Again, I apologize to you and Mr. Parson. I’ll take you at your word that you are not and the same, and bid you welcome to the community.

Perhaps you could shed some light on what work Mr. Parson actually did for you beyond the specific context of these two topics?

  6. I use Spiegel Architectural Woodwork, in Kingston, NY. They have hundreds of profiles beyond the huge scope of their online catalog: http://www.sawmoulding.com/. If I can’t find what I’m looking for, I trace the outline and fax it to them. In my experience, they usually have a knife already made that matches exactly. If you’re doing a lot, they can deliver, otherwise they can FedEx up to 8 feet, I think, or you can just take a little drive and pick it up.

  7. Check out Yas Ikuma at info@brooklynartisan.com. Dykes has some good stuff, but I use him for my custom crown molding, making the knives and all. He’s easy to work, reliable, and comes up with cost saving solutions.

  8. I get my custom profiles made at Adriatic Hardwoods (718-922-4621) in Brooklyn. They have made several historic profiles for me based on samples I have provided and my customers have always been pleased. They also have most available species of hardwoods in stock. FYI, I suspect Dykes sources some profiles and custom work from them –

If you call them, as for Jon and tell him “Stetson” sent you.
