somebody this week put some shoe cream on my beautiful woodfloor
and i can’t get rid of it. the value of my house is the wood work.
does anybody have any idea on how i could fix it. there are two large spots.

  1. You do not say what kind of finish is on the floor. If it is water base polyurethane or shellac (not that anybody uses shellac anymore – but I’ve seen it on floors) isypropal alcohol will soften the finish and will blend the shoe cream into it and it will harden that way. The same can be said for using goof off on water poly floors.

    goof off and alcohol should be ok if the floors are finished with oil poly.

    Someone suggested steel wool. I would start with the finest, I suppose it is 0000 and rub it lightly. Or a small white buffing pad or automobile compound (Tarzian carries this). For that matter, old style toothpaste should do the trick. You will change the gloss level of the floor which you can try to polish out a little with pumice powder or as the reader above wax it a bit (yes, wax over poly. Butchers or the like). Rub it in and it should hide the repairs.

  2. I find a spray of windex on a rag works very well on shoe polish stains. Spray Windex 2 or 3 times on a clean damp rag, rub the stain off, then rinse off with just water and dry.
