In a co-op in Brooklyn Hts and when all the windows are closed, I get a really strange smell. At first I thought it was gas but its not. Strangely enough, I have walked through various streets in Brooklyn Hts and seem to catch whiffs of it here and there. It may sound a little crazy, but I am not sure how to get rid of it. Maybe its just old building smell??

  1. If it smells like wet dog, you have mice. Get rid of the mice, and wash down the perimeter of all rooms with half-bleach, half-water with a squirt of dishwashing liquid soap.

    They are disgusting.

  2. Do you happen to fart immediately after closing the windows? That could explain it.

  3. What does it smell like? Mildew, wet wood, sewer, chemical, etc.? Sounds like mold and mildew if you’re smelling it in the streets. Brownstone basements with dirt floors are often musty.

  4. not the smell of the old buildings, just the smell of the stale people that live there.

  5. smells like mold to me too. it is an odd smell and comes up after rain particularly. it’s a musty odor and the only thing that works is to get rid of the mold. nothing covers it up.

  6. maybe carbon monoxide backup from the boiler..do you have a carbon monoxide detector?
