I recently bought a co-op, and my unit happens to be very near a small park and deli – both of which are apparently gathering places on nice days. I actually don’t mind the gathering so much, but there is always a soundtrack accompanying these gatherings. People either open up their cars and blare music for all to hear, or they bring boom boxes. I am subjected to music all day and evening, all weekend long. I’ve even heard the music coming from the windows of the building next door (which I do not think is a co-op). I call 311 all the time, but what else can I do to get this under control? The little park is actually designated as a “Quiet Zone.”

  1. It was a combination of lots of calls and the intervention of Tish James with the precinct and the parks dept and a willingness of the condo to work to a joint solution. The community liaison officer at the precinct recommended 311 instead of calling the precinct.

  2. Studies prove children perform worse academically who live in continually noisy environments. Here’s a city that pours all kinds of money and effort and sweat and tears into trying to improve schools and test scores but then tolerates chronic noise and barks at others to shut up and take it? Go figure.

  3. I’ve really enjoyed reading everyone’s comments – supportive, critical, and silly. I appreciate the discussion.

@bonhuma: Do you know how the problem you had was ultimately resolved? Was it just a lot of 311 calls by everyone in the building, or did more action have to be taken?

PS I actually feel that noisy upstairs neighbors (heels or kids) would be far worse, so I’m grateful I am not suffering from that. Knock on wood…

  4. Slopey, in that case, when I roll through the second time, it’ll be Neil Diamond coming outta the speakers 🙂 “Cracklin’ Rosie” anyone?

  5. Childrens feet don’t compare with high heels in my book. I’m sure I once had an upstairs neighbor that had stilleto slippers. 12 noon till about 3am was prime time.

Actually thinking about it now I should’ve gone up there to discuss it with her.

  6. I know it was said up there, but so true…children’s feet running constantly is the worst thing ever. I have wished horrible things on the couple upstairs for this, and I feel awful about it. Then I hear it again and the wishing comes back. I imagine you feel the same way about the music.
