I recently bought a co-op, and my unit happens to be very near a small park and deli – both of which are apparently gathering places on nice days. I actually don’t mind the gathering so much, but there is always a soundtrack accompanying these gatherings. People either open up their cars and blare music for all to hear, or they bring boom boxes. I am subjected to music all day and evening, all weekend long. I’ve even heard the music coming from the windows of the building next door (which I do not think is a co-op). I call 311 all the time, but what else can I do to get this under control? The little park is actually designated as a “Quiet Zone.”

  1. This is exactly why it is important to visit an area as often as you can before deciding to purchase a property. Before we purchased our home in Crown Heights we visited the location at least 10/12 times…in the morning, in the evening, on Sundays, at night, during the summer, during the fall, during school hours, after school hours, etc etc etc. You have to drive through, walk around, visit the corner stores and take a look at the locations of the nearest bus stops and trains stations. I know it seems like a lot but buying a home is a huge purchase and you have to know what you are getting yourself into.

  2. I agree that everyone is entitled to peace and quiet.I had a neighbor who was new to the hood and for some reason he felt the need to sit outside on the stoop on Saturday mornings at 8am in the summer and play his guitar and sing to his heart’s content.I was very annoyed especially since he couldn’t sing. One Saturday morning after he finished one song and before he could start again, a guy who couldnt be seen shouted out from a window ” Shut the f-c- up fore I pop your azz. As I peeked thru the window trying to see who said it all I saw was a blur as my neighbor jumped up and bolted inside never to be heard from again. Just sayin. That was a couple of years ago and he moved shortly thereafter.

  3. There was a great episode of “Becker” (did anyone other than me watch that show??!!) where he gets pissed off because someone blares rap music from their car. He says, “Do you see me driving around blasting James Taylor? NOOOOO!” ROFL

**full disclosure…If I ever got stupid enough to blast music from a car, it would totally be James Taylor. “Fire and Rain” anyone?**

  4. Rmf – ignore the perpetually stupid race characterizations.

Location research is important, which is no use to you now of course.

I rented a place for a year with a 24hr soundtrack. In the end I got more and more wound up, not acclimatized to it. I moved of course. As for your current situation – the white noise generator really is the most practical solution.

Don’t read the article in this weekend’s NYTimes about how continual noise has permanent affects on your health.

Stoner – are you saying rmf should thank his lucky stars the style of music isn’t worse?!

  5. “this is not a race issue. I suppose I never should have made the Latin comment – ”

Uhh, yes it is. And that is not a bad thing or a RACIST thing to mention. It. just. is.

And you shoulda known better – but now you know – so get used to it – complain when it’s latenight or extremely egregious – Other than that, tough shit dood. Get used to it. I live in Bushwick and I did.

  6. Seriously though – I have friends who live in more ‘festive’ neighborhoods and eventually it just sorta fades into the background and you get used to it.

Also, certain machines that create ‘white noise’ really help (like an A/C or fan or something)

  7. Listen I am Black I live in Bed-Stuy and have for a very long time. Loud Music, Loud Talking, and Loitering are a everyday crime. Everyone should have the right to enjoy their space Black, White and Latin, However everyone must be considerate to quiet time, music time, sleep time, and talk time it is a community before its a city and basic respect goes a long way. White People don’t feel like you can’t complain as a owner its your right and if I was in all White area and Loud music was wearing me down I would call the police on them as well.
