We’re looking at a brownstone on Lefferts Place between Grande and Classon, and I would love input on those familiar with the block on the gneral quality of life. The block seemed to be very pleasant and quiet, with neighbors chatting on the sidewalk. The children’s park off Classon seemed clean and well-maintained. I understand there is the seedy Lefferts Hotel right there and low-income housing on the corner of Lefferts and Classon, but does the street feel safe and family friendly in general?

  1. Not sure if you have made your decision already, but be forewarned; the corner of Classon and Lefferts has a low rent apartment monstrosity and the neighbors that occupy the place are often up and outside until 4am blasting music and having conversations at the top of their lungs…even during weeknights. If you don’t mind that, then have at it. It is much more peaceful towards Grand and St. James.

  2. We recently purchased a brownstone on Lefferts Pl b/w St. James and Grand. I have two young children and so far the block has been a very pleasant place to live. It feels pretty safe, a little on the fringes being b/w Atlantic and Fulton, but we have had a great experience here overall. There is a great little community garden and lots of friendly neighbors. Actually, it is a lot better than I had expected due to location. The street is fairly quiet and quite beautiful. I do not wonder too often towards Franklin, though there seems to be some renovation work going on towards that end of the street.

  3. Would have to agree more with Lefferts than EAB, whose report is in my opinion exaggerates the situation around there. The Lefferts Motel (the seedy motel referred to above) has recently been closed by the DOB and hopefully that will improve streetlife on that end of the block. Its a gorgeous block and around the corner from a newly burgeoning Fulton Street business district.

  4. I live on Lefferts Place and have been there for about 2.5 years. I love it. Yes there have been some incidents of crime in the neighborhood but I don’t think it is disproportionate to what is going on in Fort Greene or Clinton Hill in general. Also we have a very active block association that has been in constant contact with the local precincts, politicians, business owners and business improvement districts. We are actually having a meeting on Wed June 2th at 7pm at the SDA Church on the corner of Grand and Lefferts Place. There you can hear discuss current issues affecting the block and meet some neighbors. Feel free to reach out to me if you want to speak further.

  5. I used to live on Clifton and Grand (a couple blocks away) and in my opinion the area is kind of seedy. Grand avenue seems to have a disproportionate amount of drug dealers and shady characters that hang around there. There have also been several shootings and a rape recently. Even though it was kind of sketchy I actually did like living there — but if you are buying its really something you need to take into account.
