I live not too far from a business that opens at 6am every day. Around 5:50am they start up what has got to be the loudest leaf blower I’ve ever heard. A leaf blower?, you ask. Yes, a leaf blower! They do this every morning, including Saturdays and Sundays. At 5:50am!!! And no, they are not blowing leaves. Instead of sweeping up the sidewalk in front of their establishment, they turn on a leaf blower and blow all the litter, etc. into the street so that it becomes the DOS’s problem. Not just to the curb. I’ve watched them actually blow it into the middle of the street and then walk away. I’ve considered calling 311 to make a complaint, but I want to be realistic and not waste my time. Do you think anything will honestly come of such a complaint (noise and blowing sidewalk litter into the middle of the street)? What’s the likelihood that they’d even bother to send someone out to investigate and witness this at that hour of the morning? I’m really sick of being startled awake by this noise EVERY SINGLE MORNING. Is my only recourse a good set of earplugs?

  1. Thanks, Vinca. I also want to be sure that they are hit with a noise violation as well. My fear is that they will continue to use the leave blower, even if just to get the litter in one pile and then sweep instead of just sweeping it all. Any chance that whoever polices noise at that hour would swing by to witness it?

  2. As already noted above, their “cleaning” violates several local laws. Best dealt with by filing a complaint with 311 and/or directly with DSNY. There are additional sections to the one cited directly below:

    Commercial Premise Enforcement Routing
Under the Enforcement Routing Program, enforcement agents patrol all commercial and industrial blocks at specified times focusing on violations for dirty sidewalks and failure to clean 18 inches into the street. During the enforcement routing time, when enforcement agents observe a dirty sidewalk or an 18 inch violation in front of/adjacent to a commercial or industrial premise, a notice of violation will be issued. Although enforcement agents will issue notices for dirty sidewalk or failure to clean 18 inches into the street violations only during the specified 2 one-hour daily routing time periods, they may issue notices for all other violations at any time. Although the commercial routing times vary by Sanitation District/Section where the business is located, all commercial premises should be maintained (the sidewalk and the area 18 inches from the curb) at the beginning and end of the day. This makes good business sense and helps keep the community clean. For more information about the specific commercial enforcement routing times, for a particular location, call the New York City Customer Service Center at 311.

  3. I haven’t approached them about it (I know, I know, I should). I’m not particularly interested in being nice about this and giving them a chance to stop – I don’t believe they will as they are nasty people to begin with and I have issues with them that go beyond this noise and litter spreading. And yes, Antidope, I’d rather waste 2 minutes creating a forum post before I commit to spending a mind-numbing 20 minutes with the mouth breathing 311 operators who have about as much sense as God gave a goose’s ass, especially if the probability of getting someone of authority out there at that hour of the morning. Does anyone know if that’s even a possibility? (Sanitation officers at 5:50am?)
