I live not too far from a business that opens at 6am every day. Around 5:50am they start up what has got to be the loudest leaf blower I’ve ever heard. A leaf blower?, you ask. Yes, a leaf blower! They do this every morning, including Saturdays and Sundays. At 5:50am!!! And no, they are not blowing leaves. Instead of sweeping up the sidewalk in front of their establishment, they turn on a leaf blower and blow all the litter, etc. into the street so that it becomes the DOS’s problem. Not just to the curb. I’ve watched them actually blow it into the middle of the street and then walk away. I’ve considered calling 311 to make a complaint, but I want to be realistic and not waste my time. Do you think anything will honestly come of such a complaint (noise and blowing sidewalk litter into the middle of the street)? What’s the likelihood that they’d even bother to send someone out to investigate and witness this at that hour of the morning? I’m really sick of being startled awake by this noise EVERY SINGLE MORNING. Is my only recourse a good set of earplugs?

  1. maybe talk to someone at your community board…When city gets they complaint filed by them can get better response.
Also – more compaints the better -so if other neighbors don’t like it – ask them to join in and call too.

  2. so now your original 2 minutes has turned into hours (btw, this kinda acts as a surrogate definition for *internet*, imo) AND you still get to do some heavy breathing with 311! Have fun.

  3. Assuming they rent the space, try to find out the name of the building owner and contact him telling him that you’re going to step up the complaints and that violations (and fines) are likely to be issued to the building.

  4. Snappy: As far as I know, Dept. of Environmental Protection noise complaints need to go through 311, too. More info here: http://bit.ly/dw0bZr
I suspect that in Bloomberg’s ticket-happy administration, someone would be very happy make an early morning visit in exchange for the opportunity to meet their quota. In this case, the tickets would be well-deserved.
