This may be the most unlikely question to be posted here, but we are really looking for some opinions. We have been in BedStuy for the past 6 years, great house, nice neighbors. Growing family and less disp inc we are reluctantly considering relocating out of the city. Know nothing about NY suburbs. Not a huge suburb/country person so looking for a place that is diverse, has a nice walking village area, not a 3 hr 1-way commute to the city, “hip”-ish like BK 🙂 and a reputation of happy residents. I know it’s asking for a lot. Some folks have mentioned Riverdale, Garden City, Westport, Hoboken. Just wanted to see what others thought. Thanks sooo much!

  1. Not many die-hard city lovers here (except for lalene).

You have “a great house” “great neighbors” and you like it in BS. So why ARE you moving anyway?

Having a family is absolutely NOT a reason, in fact it’s a foolish reason to want to move. Raise your kids in the suburbs?…Schlepping them everywhere until they demand a car at 15 and you wait up m nights worrying about them crashing, no autonomy or independence, have to make special trips to do anything cultural.

  2. Rob, the areas you mentioned are pretty much a combination of blue collar real neighborhoods and upscale gated communities. Schools are so-so.

I moved to Fort Lee and returned to Brooklyn as soon as I could.

  3. Real estate in the suburbs has gone down to earth. You can easily find victorian renovated houses for $500K. Similar era brownstones or ditmas victorians, usually dark or cramped, would go for double and triple than that. Although taxes are high they end up the same if you consider NYC income and property taxes. You get great schools and lots of space, greenery and safety. You lose in hipsterness (but not culture as those are independent) and, depending where you work, in commuting time. For a family with two kids there is no question: go to suburbs.
You will need a car but so do most of the brooklyn people here although they do not admit it. I can tell that from their lust when a house with a garage comes up for sale.

  4. With respect to expenses, there is something one should know about Bronxville: Bronxville proper is very expensive, but if you go a short walk to the other side of the parkway, it becomes Yonkers with Bronxville schools (I think; that issue was not so important when we were looking), a Bronxville address, access to Bronxville village; Yonkers prices. Talk to the real estate agents in that area, they know the lines – but this was one of the tricks to living in Bronxville on a budget.

  5. North Bergen / West New York / Guttenberg are all excellent choice inner ring NYC suburbs across the river in NJ. Edgewater as well, but that’s pretty pricey.

Fort Lee / Cliffside park are good as well.
