This may be the most unlikely question to be posted here, but we are really looking for some opinions. We have been in BedStuy for the past 6 years, great house, nice neighbors. Growing family and less disp inc we are reluctantly considering relocating out of the city. Know nothing about NY suburbs. Not a huge suburb/country person so looking for a place that is diverse, has a nice walking village area, not a 3 hr 1-way commute to the city, “hip”-ish like BK 🙂 and a reputation of happy residents. I know it’s asking for a lot. Some folks have mentioned Riverdale, Garden City, Westport, Hoboken. Just wanted to see what others thought. Thanks sooo much!
Petebklyn, good point but the privtae parking also available at stations has laughable rates. Certainly less per month than what I pay Bloomers when I get up late for alternative side parking.

thanks for the link–I was always wondering how things are on this part
The brooklyn filthy rich live in BH townhouses, its workaday rich the who live in PS townhouses.
In my experience, people who moved to suburbs that felt “kinda like the city” ended up being miserable! But I have a number of ex-Brooklynite friends who live in upper Westchester and really love it. I visit now and then and the area is great–nice towns, beautiful country, lots of hiking, good art and music venues.
One of my friends has a blog (based on Brownstoner):

Good luck!
oh, and another thing….just because place has train station and close —doesn’t mean they have space available at train station for you to park. So be sure to check that out too. Waiting lists, etc. (and of course monthly fee to park).
Unless you are single who needs the city life and singledom amenities or filthy rich who can afford the “house of the day” in Park Slope or other uppity neighborhood, living in Brooklyn makes no sense because it is too expensive for what it offers.
Avoid areas very close to the city such as yonkers, hoboken, fort lee, etc
Here are some suggestions: pelham, larchomnt marmaroneck, rye, eastchester, scarsdale, tarrytown, hastings, irvington, dobbs, sleepy hollow, ossining, katonah and many other in westchester. Also many towns in essex and bergen counties in NJ
Cold Spring or Garrison on the Hudson, for real coutry life.
Philly is an option, but don’t think you’ll be moving to a mini NYC. Philly is a small-town city
everyone i know who has left brooklyn has moved to either montclair or maplewood. montclair is bigger than maplewood = more restaurants, etc. they still complain about the schools, though!
