We have finally finished bathroom reno (almost) and I am ready to take a long bath!
I cleaned out the tub somewhat using Zud and a scrubber and there is still some shadowy stains….also some really dark rust spots near drain.
Does anyone have any cleaning advice? Would peroxide (I have both the drugstore brand and 40%) help or hurt?
I am not interested in refinishing….I like the matter finish (and the history). Thanks in advance!
I know it sounds silly but I used oven cleaner on my old claw foot tub and it worked perfectly. Make sure that your tub is porcelain otherwise you will take off the finish. Good luck
I think there are people who “re-glaze” porcelain tubs. We have an old clawfoot that is porous and never gets very clean and that’s what I was told would need to be done.
Sorry I don’t know anyone who does it (it’s at the bottom of our long to-do list) but maybe someone else does if the scrubbing projects don’t work out. I was told this costs about $150.
I have used bar keepers friend and it’s amazing on taking out rust stains. Bleach is also a miracle product, you can lay paper towels down, soak with bleach and this may help. I’ve also done a paste of comet which works well too.
Thanks so much for the advice. I also got a reply of “Mr. Clean Magic Eraser”. Will try them all.
If you have a moment, please read my question about shower curtains for said tub.
Thanks to all.
Bar keepers friend. The powder, not liquid. For the rust spot, make a paste and leave on the spot for about 5 minutes. Will fade the stain to almost nothing.
As long as the coating is intact you can use pumice to clean it, works like a charm on both of our original clawfoots which were a mess when we got them (with the rest of the house).
I use to add bleach after a bath and let it soak before I pulled the plug. The problem you’ll have is that the matte finish is pourous and you will constantly have a dirt issue.
Seems you want to keep it, unfinished.
If the bleach works, maybe coat it with car wax and buff it. This will not be a permanent fix to keeping it clean but it might last a couple or few months.
Good luck
