We are in the process of replacing the kitchen in the Victorian home we bought. With the 203K loan we obtained, there is only a finite amount of $$ and it is getting used up REAL quick. My question: we had alloted an amount of money for kitchen cabinets that is being eaten away by other problems that have emerged (surprise). I had intended on a flat-front shaken maple from Kraft-Maid, but I had heard mention of a place in the Slope that makes the same quality cabinets for less (I think I heard an “about 20% less”) Clock is ticking and we need to get order placed so we can get in the house soon….but before I placed the order I wanted to query Brownstoners to see if anyone might know such a place.

I also welcome any other cabinet suggestions….but I have to say, I do not love Ikea cabinets. I tried to….I love the price….but I just cannot work up the enthusiasm for them.

Thank you to anyone in advance

  1. I will let you know on a little secret. There is a company in Chicago called Best Cabinets and they will sell direct to anyone in the country. It bypasses the middle man and gives you the Best Quality Cabinet I have seen anywhere. They use only quality materials and they make all their own doors and drawers too. They even have “Green” Products available. You might want to check them out http://www.thebestcabinets.com.

They build both a custom line and a semicustom line, a frameless line and a full inset line. They were featured in Trends Magazine and Signature Kitchens and Baths.

There prices seem pretty good too!

  3. DWhelan,

Some firms do everything from design, to fabrication, to install. Some hire an installer. It can vary depending on the size of the job. I always think it’s best to work with someone who is responsible for everything from design to install. It keeps things much less complicated.

If you’ve any questions, feel free to contact me at info@brooklynmodern.com.

  4. Hi- I want to do some renovation work on my galley kitchen. I am not moving walls or doing anything with plumbing or electricity. Not sure how to approach- do I hire someone to do everything or someoen to design and install and I buy the cabinets.. Any suggestions and recommendations for firms to work with are greatly appreciated.

  6. I love the Rich Maid Cabinets that Brooklyn kitchen carried, but recommend that you get them from Landmark kitchens.
    718 343-3800.
They are one upgrade from Medallion, and less expensive then Plain and Fancy. Especially worth the money for natural wood finishes. And Landmark is very reliable!

  7. I am glad to hear that someone had a good experience ordering KraftMaid from Home Depot. I had a terrible time. Long story short but my cabinets arrived in bad shape I hated the color and my contractor started nailing them in before I got home. The bad doors (peeling bubbling stain, poorly mitered joints on trim, warped wood) were a disaster. In the end I spent months fighting with them and was successful in getting KraftMaid to replace the doors and Home Depot to refund half but it was an obsession which required practically stalking the HD people. Don’t do it.

With cost an issue, consider checking out Green Demolitions. They accept donations of kitchens (often brand new — i.e. someone buys a house and doesn’t like the kitchen in the house — these are often very high end kitchens. Anyway, the donations raise money for drug rehabilitation programs. Take a look. The people there are lovely.

Also check out Kraftmaid Factory Outlets. You might be able to get cheaper stuff.

    Good luck.

  8. If budget remains an issue and you truly want to avoid an Ikea MDF box cabinet, as we do, you may want to try Scherr’s. They make cabinets to custom dimensions with many door styles and a huge selection of wood at about half the price of other custom manufacturers.

They cater primarily to tradesman, who often need doors or drawers only, and who will assemble and finish the cabinets on-site. We will order Shaker doors, hardwood drawers, plywood boxes, mostly unassembled, assemble them and finish them in the basement, and install them ourselves. If you trust your contractor to do the same, you can really save $$.

Our cost will be closer to $8500 for 12 very well made cabinets (including multiple upgrades) instead of the $20K or so for Kraftmaid, Merilat, Plain and Fancy, etc. we thought we could afford 2 years ago. That leaves $$ for the soapstone counters, the Marmoleum Click flooring, and the appliances.

Sample doors are an the way from Scherr’s as we speak. Super friendly people so far. Leon Scherr, son of the founder, is who you will likely deal with. Let me know if you want any more details on our experience.
