We are in the process of replacing the kitchen in the Victorian home we bought. With the 203K loan we obtained, there is only a finite amount of $$ and it is getting used up REAL quick. My question: we had alloted an amount of money for kitchen cabinets that is being eaten away by other problems that have emerged (surprise). I had intended on a flat-front shaken maple from Kraft-Maid, but I had heard mention of a place in the Slope that makes the same quality cabinets for less (I think I heard an “about 20% less”) Clock is ticking and we need to get order placed so we can get in the house soon….but before I placed the order I wanted to query Brownstoners to see if anyone might know such a place.

I also welcome any other cabinet suggestions….but I have to say, I do not love Ikea cabinets. I tried to….I love the price….but I just cannot work up the enthusiasm for them.

Thank you to anyone in advance

  1. I am in the process of renovating my kitchen as well and have a set budget!

We purchased the Omega Birch Madrid Natural Cabinets from…gasp Home Depot for the outer perimeter and Alder Truffle for the Island. We did a simple cabinet style.Home Depot was running a special last week with a 20% discount if you spend about 20K. We were ablet get our cabs for under 20K with the discount. Good Luck!

  2. Good to know about Park Slope Kitchen Gallery. Thanks Sogo. I am going to check them out too. Finally,a very wealthy friend of mine and serial renovater (and thus quite experienced with all sorts of custom cabinetry) also recommended to me Wood Mode. I haven’t check them out yet but I think they are sort of semi-custom and hold up very well. Good luck. PTF

  3. You know, PTF, what bothered me about Ikea was the boxes, not the doors! They just looked/felt so cheap. My contractor (who I can’t seem to reach) told me of a place where one of his clients, a professional prep chef, got Kraft-Maid like wood cabinets at less.

I too looked at Beagles and Potts….way out of my range. Beautiful stuff though; I saw their demos at the Cortelyou Rd Street Fair.

  4. I am in the same boat. One suggestion might be ordering the carcasses from Ikea and then getting the drawer fronts and door elsewhere. This is what I am trying to do. I am waiting for a quote from Beagle and Potts (in Park SLope, perhaps that is who you were thinking of?), who do wonderful work but might be out of our price range. But there are also a couple of places that sell cabinet doors and drawer fronts individually. There are a number of posts about doing this on the kitchen forum on Garden Web. Two places that seem set up to match the Ikea carcasses are refacedepot.com and scherrs.com. If you go this route, I would appreciate you posting about how it goes. Good luck. PTF

  5. I never ordered through HD, but the problem did seem to be at Kraft-Maid’s end. A friend had that trouble, too. They don’t get the orders right.

  6. I did read on Yelp or Google somewhere about how awful is Brooklyn Kitchen and Bath….but thank you for the reminder.

This was a place, I think someone said on PPW (but I can’t remember anything like that) where cabinets were crafted.

You don’t have any idea if Home Depot is any better at ordering than Lowe’s, do you (I doubt it)? I HATE the idea of using big-business stores and would much rather order from a cabinet shop too.

    THANKS
