I’m purchasing some vacant land in NYC. I already know the zoning on the lots but am looking for a architect to verify that it is buildable land and discuss what can be built.

  1. your biggest obstacle is not finding an engineer or an
    architect,
    but
one who will finish the work.
Thank god for all those who do not finish , keeps us in
    business.

  2. Denton,

As someone who has been posting answers to general and specific questions here on Brownstoner for years now, I feel like part of this community. I’m sure you do, too. Yours is one name that I see here often, and always with helpful information. I get a lot of my business from people who have seen my replies here and liked what I had to say. A few months ago, the moderators added a Rules and Regulations header to the forum, stating:

Here’s what’s allowed on the Forum: Questions from readers about renovation, gardening, real estate and quality-of-life issues relating to home ownership; readers (not businesses) are also encouraged to post architectural salvage items for sale. Here’s what’s not allowed: Self-promotional posts by businesses of any kind, events postings, off-topic rants and cut-and-paste articles. Contractors and other service providers may respond to general reader questions or to specific negative reviews.

Clearly, they intend, and rightfully so, to limit the use of this forum as free advertising for building professionals. Prior to that header, I would often suggest my name whenever someone posted asking for services that I could provide. After the header went up, I stopped, as did most, if not all, long-time contributors.

Recently, I have seen many new names popping up, posting self-recommendations, and it now seems that those of us who have refrained from this type of use are faced with the decision of either respecting the forum’s rules and risk losing business, or posting similar self-promotions in an effort to let people know that we are still here, and would like the opportunity to discuss the work described.

This forum started as a means for owners and residents of brownstones to trade resources, recommendations and experiences in a cooperative effort to share knowledge and help each other out. I appreciate the effort of the moderators to keep it that way, and for one, am happy to continue to post answers to questions whenever I can, and hope that people contact me because I am a knowledgeable professional who respects the spirit of this community.

Thank you for listening (reading). I hope I did not offend anybody with this rant.

  5. I don’t think there’s a rule, since everyone here is open about it. What sucks is when someone pretends to be someone he’s not.

What doesn’t suck is guys who give advice fully and freely here every day, they deserve to get a crack at some biz.

I won’t point to anyone here, but guys like masterplumver and those like him.

  6. Well, since we’re no longer heeding the rule regarding self-promotion, I figure I’ll mention myself, too. I am an architect with an office in Manhattan, but most of my work is now in Brooklyn. I work closely with one contractor (who lives and is based out of Brooklyn) in a design-build type relationship. This allows us to set and keep construction budgets from the start. Our budget includes a line-by-line breakdown of the entire design, construction documentation, and filing process, as well as every item needed to build the home. We’ve been working together this way for years, so we are now able to very quickly create this complete proposal without having to wait for complete construction documents.

We have developed a unique design-build method in which the project manager working in the office on the drawings actually becomes the on-site project manager for the duration of the project. He is on site all day, every day, working side-by-side with the tradespeople, making sure the design intent is carried through consistently from the drawings to the field. This maintains our presence on the site at all times, and is an efficient means of ensuring quality and efficiency.

I would very much like the opportunity to speak with you about this project. Please call me at (646) 309-7259.
