We have been contacted via phone no less than 20 times in the past week from “MX Energy” and “Spark Energy” – Both touting savings if we switch to their “energy providing service”. It just reeks of scam, but I just wondered if anybody has done this and has had success actually saving money. Seems there are 47 companies in our area acting as ESCO’s…and VERY little actual information out there.

  1. I live in a Sunset Park co-op. Someone came to my apartment door tonight, introduced herself as a ConEd worker, here to perform a “meter reading followup.” She asked to see my bill in order to find out about possible savings. “Okay. Just a sec” i said. Needless to say, I called the cops. After only a twenty minute response time, two of NY’s finest rolled up and, essentially, did nothing. The woman who knocked on my door was with a small team of “professionals,” spread out among the various floors here, trying to scam my co-op neighbors – mainly foreigners- into unwittingly switching over to a company called Spark Energy. The woman who came to my door had her badge turned away from me when she initially knocked, but, when the team from Spark Energy found out the cops were on their way, amazingly they all came downstairs with their Spark Energy badges prominently displayed. The cops who eventually showed up were two lazy pigs who clearly wanted to get back to eating donuts. The cops merely got the solicitors out of our apartment. But.. GET THIS…5 minutes later some white guy with an accent (“the Boss”) comes over with one of the people I just had kicked out and says “This the guy?” “Yeah.” “What’s your name.” I said “None of your fucking business and I’m calling the cops again” and the boss and his understudy scurried out. But before I slammed the gate closed behind him, the douche bag Boss says “I’ll see you again.” SparkEnergy is a fucking scam. They try to trick you into signing up with them to steal your money. They trespass and misrepresent themselves and the city government should do something. Don’t let them in. Complain to the mayor.

  2. Spark Energy is currently on the prowl in Sunset Park. The guy that rang my bell was polite and well-mannered. He presented himself as a consultant contracted by ConEd and National Grid. He asked to see our bill to check if we are receiving the discount that were owe to us because of a new government program. Watch out for them. warn your family, friends and neighbors.

  3. MXenergy has served millions of customers and has been in business since 1999 selling natural gas and electricity to homeowners and small businesses. We offer fixed and variable rates that can help you manage your energy budget. Information about the company, including rates, can be found at http://www.mxenergy.com.

  4. DO NOT USE MX ENERGY

we got fucked over by them costing us hundreds of dollars. you will not save by switching to them!

  5. I know zero about these particular guys. But ESCO scams are a HUGE problem in Brooklyn:

It’s too bad this market is so messed up. What if there is a legit company out there that’s figured out a way to give a better deal on energy costs? I won’t even try them, b/c this market is so scammed out I don’t believe anyone.

A good illustration of Akerlof’s “market for lemons” problem. http://bk.ly/bqo
