Hello –

I’m beginning to look for a studio/1 BR rental in Clinton Hill/Park Slope/Prospect Hts–or anywhere affordable for me. I’ve been perusing craigslist, but there seems to be a lot of non-legit postings, even on the ‘owner’ adds. I’ve also looked on various realtor sites and streeteasy. Also, I’ve relocated to NYC from another well-known city several hours away, so I am used to the competitive renting market. I’m currently renting an apt. in jersey from a friend, but my goal is to be closer to the city. So, I’d greatly appreciate key points that I need to know about renting in NYC.

So, if anyone can recommend respectable realtors (no fee–not in this economy, I’m sure it’s more than possible), areas I should check out, not on my list above, and just anything else I’m missing–then, please post here or email me direct at: newapt2010@gmail.com

Thanks! Looking forward to reading responses.

  1. Hi Hollifer,
I just sent you a note about a top floor 3 bedroom flat we’ll have available March 1, but also would love to let other Brownstoner folks know about it. It’s in a two-unit bowfront limestone in Crown Heights — steps from the Kingston Ave 3 and 4 stop on Eastern Parkway, lots of great food shopping, and what a post here said recently will be a new kosher pizza place right across the street.

The flat is the full top floor, totally renovated with custom touches like transom windows and skylights for lots of light, bay windows in the living room and one bedroom, high ceilings, wood floors, extra tall Shaker cabinets and granite counters, dishwasher and new appliances, washer/dryer.

Our family is managing it together and my brother, an architect, lives right up the street and will be on hand for any issues. We know what it’s like to be renters so we are looking for someone who would take good care of the place and would like to be treated like a real human being. The rent is $1900 with heat and hot water included so 2 people could easily rent it and have an extra room.

Interested parties can give us a shout at LincolnPlaceRental@gmail.com

  2. That would be great quikazoid. Any leads would be helpful. I have much exploring to do in Brooklyn. Thanks!

  3. @Hollifer – gf’s coworker was moving to carroll gardens so she offered us the spot. the landlords own a bunch of properties in bay ridge i can ask them if anything is becoming available.

  4. We just put our rental budget, where we were looking to move (Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Prospect Heights, Clinton Hill) and a general description of ourselves (we didn’t use our names, though) We got plenty of responses and it was nice to feel like we were in control of the situation.

Make sure to mention in our ad that brokers should not contact you- although it won’t stop them, there are plenty of desperate brokers out there.

    Good luck!

  5. Try Sublet.com. You don’t need a bloodsucking parisite broker to find a home in this market.

  6. What kind of info did you include in your ad? What area were you looking into?

  7. I recently found a new place by posting an ad about myself under the “housing wanted” section on Craigslist. I was contacted by quite a few legitimate owners, one of whom will be my new landlord next month. I would highly suggest it.

  8. Thanks quikazoid. How did you find your place? Did you go through a realtor? Any recommendations on realtors there?

My commute now is an hour, and was an hour where I used to live, so 45 min. is no big deal to me.

  9. transferring to the N train @ 59th street gets you into union sq in 25-30 minutes tops. Sitting on the R train is a lot longer. i got a huge 2 bedroom in bay ridge for $1400.

Inwood/Wash Hts are also good places, but neither subway line goes directly to Union Sq.

I don’t know how important it is to you, but there are a lot less nightlife/dining options in Wash Hts/Inwood than Bay Ridge.
