A recent inspection of the boiler in our building showed that we needed to have an exterior emergency shut-off switch installed. We’ve never been told before that this was a code requirement. Is this true?

  1. Yes. Accoridng to the city’s building code you need an exterior switch

  2. Yes… and to reiterate bupe. Locate it somewhere you’ve thought through (i.e., don’t let an electrician decide where to put it). When it’s dark the red cover doesn’t mater — it feels like a light switch. So, try to avoid having to do the whole masking tape and note (“Do not touch”).

  3. usually the switch is located at the top of the stairs leading to the basement.

and you need a special red colored switch cover for identification in an emergency, about 3 bucks at home depot.

  4. It’s true. Ours is conveniently located just outside of the basement door, and despite it being RED and the red plate, people (random guests) still turn off our boiler regularly. Which in this weather SUCKS.

  5. Yes, everywhere in the US practically….somewhere outside the boiler room.

  6. Do you mean exterior like outside? emergency switch is required outside the boiler room.
