Fellow brownstoners,
Last week I made a post about having the most insulated apartment in the history of NYC. I stated how I’ve yet to turn on the heat, etc etc. I just got my first National Grid gas bill. The bill is for 7 days – with total of 16 therms ($30.01 bill) used. It seems a lot to me considering I am on the road during the week. We don’t cook much and are pretty considerate when it comes to showers. I called National Grid and they said it consistent with their historical usage. I am wondering if the gas meter is just incorrectly capturing the actual usage. Considering I havent used heating and its 16 therms, I am concerned when I actually do turn it on. I am forecasted to use at least 70 therms a month for a 750 square foot apartment. By the way, its a 2 family. Independent gas/electric meters.

  1. Water heater variability is not all that much, unless you have a leak.

But 16 therms/wk for water heat and cooking does not sound too off. That’s 64/month=$90-100, which is about my summer usage but for 2 family with 3 adults.

  2. You didn’t say if that was an ‘ACTUAL’ reading or an ‘ESTIMATE’. If they can’t get in to read meter they will send estimated bill based on previous usage.

  3. Herki is right. That is what drives my bill up. I pay my own heat and cooking gas and I’ll be damned, but my usage charge pale in comparison to the amount I’m billed for delivery and taxes. It’s a racket.

  4. It could have left over usage from the previous tenant. When did you move in? Our gas bill in the summer just for hot water and cooking gas is about $25-30 per month. We’re on the level payment plan, and we pay 123 a month, about $1500 a year for heat and hot water for a brick house.
