I want to cook fish once in a while. Which store is the best ( = freshest and reasonable priced) fish store in Brooklyn?

  1. Blue Moon stand at the Grand Army Plaza greenmarket beats all, but last week was their last til spring. Fairway: good but not great, you gotta still check eyes and gills meaning that fillets are a bit of a gamble (but I’ve never gotten BAD fish there, even fillets). Haven’t tried Fish Tales–where on Court St. is it? As for Chinatown, check out the relatively new ‘Great Wall Supermarket’ in the old movie theatre on Ft. Hamilton Pkway at 67th St. (next to drug store by Leif Ericsson park); they have a big dept. with all the scary turtles and live eels etc., along with fantastic prices on exotic mushrooms and regular Chinese and American supermarket stuff. (Their fruit and veg, however, are a major disappointment.)

  2. I second the comment about Choice Greene located at Greene and Grand Avenues. Katsu, the fishmonger, is also an excellent sushi chef who formerly worked at Blue Ribbon in Manhattan. Prices are comparable to Fairway. Selection is limited but very fresh, and Katsu also makes some great marinades and sauces. I live a few blocks away and buy fish every week.

  3. Chinatown: I second (or 24th) the reccos for seafood in general. Just know what to look for b/c its not always the freshest. Cant beat the prices on lobster from the wholesalers. My only concern is not really knowing where the fish comes from.

Fairway: decent prices for great quality.

Union Mkt.: agree w/Denton. Not only is it pricey but I was given 2 completely rotten smelly trout. Only discovered it after I took it home and threw it on the bbq w/o checking.

  4. I don’t think Fairway is fresh at all. My experience with their fish has been mediocre at best.

I agree that the absolute best place for fish in Brooklyn is at the Grand Army Plaza greenmarket.

In winter, I’ve found Natural Land on Flatbush near the 7th avenue Q subway stop to be terrific for fish.

  5. fishtales is by far the best in brooklyn.

the only option in terms of quality are the vendors in the fishmarkets (blue moon).

There are lots of other options but you just have to be careful what you buy. Places like union market and garden of eden are similarly hit or miss. Bob Marvin is correct about the Western Beef fish store, but I limit it to shrimp and frozen snowcrab. I’d also expect things like catfish and tilapia are fine.

  6. in WB – on metropolitan and lorimerish there’s an italian fish store, an italian butcher and an italian bakery and! a little old lady sandwich/deli store.

otherwise, all of us here can probably get fresh direct which i’ve found to have reliable fish and terrific marinated fish (and beef – the kung pao steak is great).
