Best Fish Store in Brooklyn
I want to cook fish once in a while. Which store is the best ( = freshest and reasonable priced) fish store in Brooklyn?

ANY good fish store in Williamsburg? Thanks!
Brooklyn Chinatown (many stores along their commercial strip which is in 50’s to 64th St along 8th Ave) in Sunset Park neighborhood (far from park itself, different ambience). Best prices, extremely fresh, been going there for four years, never disappointed, must have tried six or seven stores, all good. Take N train to 8th Ave stop. Warning, sidewalks are crowded.
Fish Tales is very good. Fairway is so,so. The fish vendor at the Sunday green market by the school off Smith St. is also very good, but has a limited selection. Sometimes the deckhands at Sheepshead Bay sell you what you may believe is freshly caught fish. This is not always the case. If the passengers coming coming off the boat didn’t catch fish that day, where did the deckhands get it from? An earlier trip, another day’s fishing, extra fish from somewhere? It may be freshly caught. My cousin who worked as a deckhand told me a about this scam. So, unless you trust the supplier, caveat emptor.
The best fishmongers are in Chinatown. Very fresh due to the high turnover. Great prices.
Bought a 14.5lb salmon for Christmas @ $4.00/lb. Can’t beat that!
Re Chinatown: the block of Mott St. between Grand and Hester (a block north of Canal, 2 little blocks west of Bowery) has great-looking fish stores. They are definitely fresh–sometimes they jump right out of the ice beds! If you don’t find what you want there, there are other fish places on Grand and Elizabeth and in the Hong Kong Supermarket at the corner of Hester and Elizabeth. I think the ones closer to Centre/Lafayette take advantage of their location right near the subway. THere are other stores (more expensive) south of Canal on Mulberry. Mulberry just south of Canal has an amazing assortment of street vendors of fruits and veggie, familiar and not-so-familiar, with others right around the corner on Canal.
Fish Tales is the best in Brooklyn. In summer the fish stall in the GAP Farmers Market is great. For fresh, cheap fish, there’s a Chinese supermarket with a large fish area on Ave. U between Coney Island Ave and the railway tracks (do not know the exact cross st.). Fish is really fresh – sometimes still moving. Fish from Fairway is OK but not always as fresh as it should be.
I get fish at Fairway. They always have two or three fish on sale — last week it was salmon at 5.99 a pound. It is really good. I never tried Chinatown. I’ll have to try Fish Tales and Western Beef.
I’ve had not one but two cases of stinky fish from Union Market on 7th. Agree with the guy in PP.
Fish Tales is good. The Union Market on seventh Avenue is good and cheaper than fish tales. From about May to the end of November there is a Long Island fisherman selling his catch at the farmer’s market that operates on Wednesdays at Bartel-Pritchard Circle, across from the Pavilion movie theater at the corner of Prospect Park West and Prospect Park Southwest, and he’s the best combination in terms of fresh, local, and cheap. Nice guy, too.
