Girlfriend’s tenant has been living at the apartment for well over 2 years. The apartment was handed to him “brand new”. According to the tenant the tiles in the living room need to be replaced. He states some of the tiles are lifting. Is this something the landlord is responsible for? Or does the tenant need to bare the costs?

  1. Lifting after only 2 years of what, linoleum or similar tile, is a landlord issue. They weren’t laid properly.

The only reason this would not be true is if you could see localized water damage that isn’t coming from plumbing. Some water-based mastics will release if subjected to pooling water, perhaps in the form of a shattered aquarium or similar water incident.

  2. i agree. tiles lifting off the floor are the landlord’s responsibility unless there is some VERY unusual and intensive use that the tenant has been subjecting the floor to (bowling?)

  3. You know the LL is responsible for shotty new work!!
Get yourself a hammer, finish nails or a bucket of floor adhesive and investigate for your girlfreind.
