My parents boiler is pretty old and is in need or replacement. They currently have a gas boiler. They plan on doing it sometime over the summer. The house is 4 floors (2 duplexes) and a finished basement. Not including the basement about 2400 square feet. What kind of boiler do you guys recommend? I’ve also heard about tax incentive on specific boilers. Let me know what everyone thinks.

  1. i would lay odds that it is a gas fired steam boiler…if that is true, your efficiency rating is only going to be so high…forget the modulating condensing boilers..

  2. Quickazoid, do you know what kind of heating system you’ve got? As in, is it steam or hot water heat? That will help to determine what incentives you may qualify for, if any, and what would be the most suitable boiler considering your home and budget.
High efficiency costs a lot of money at first so you need to know your options.

  3. You would be better off asking this blog for an Awesome plumber, he will be upon all the latest technology, local demands and requirments, and should know about rebate incentives.

  4. What HM is saying is a mod/con boiler with indirect water heater.

Yes, NG gives rebates for energy star boilers, check their website. This year you can also get a tax deduction, see irs.gov. I got a check from NG, I couldn’t believe it!

  5. I don’t know that much about boilers truthfully, but I do have a little experience with them because I have 2 four-story row houses each with a different boiler/system (both are gas).

In the first house there’s a newer, but cheap, boiler hooked up to a steam system. In the winter months the sludge has to be drained out of the boiler every week because of all the junk in the radiators. It has broken once and while not a total headache always makes me a little nervous. It’s not efficient at all and the gas bills are about 350-400/month. Will replace if I ever have any money again which is probably never.

In the second house, my fantastic plumbers (Aladdin), installed a Burnham boiler with an attached (sort of built-in?) hot water heater. I can’t quite recall how it works but even when the boiler is off during the summer it creates hot water. The overall system is comprised of what were formerly steam radiators that were converted to hot water. What a difference that makes — it’s quiet, nothing leaks, etc. I never even THINK about the boiler or the radiators. It was not cheap, but not worrying in the slightest about the heat in the winter makes it totally worth it. It’s also very efficient, bills are about 250/month (balanced billing on both places).

    Hope this helps.
