I saw a home on the East 80s between Ave M and N. Does anyone live around here? What is the quality of life around here? Bars? Night life? Any insight welcomed.

  1. Canarsie is a decent enough neighborhood that has experienced a population shift in the last 15-20 years due to white flight. There are still a number of white families who are not leaving – mostly elderly who have been there since the 60’s or 70’s. There are no racial problems despite the demographic shift. There has been a rise in gang related activity in and around both Canarsie High School and South Shore which has been divide into “mini-schools” but they mostly fight each other. Needless to say the public school options are not great. Parking is not an issue as many houses have driveways and there is ample off street parking as well but most parts of the neighborhood would be considered a two fare zone to the “L” train at Rockaway. Off of the main streets like Flatlands, Avenue L, Remsen and East 80th the streets are really quiet sometimes desolate. There are many Chinese takeouts and West Indian both sit down and takeout places. Some of those places are pretty nice spots to hang out but you won’t get Thai or any other variety. If you travel Mon-Thurs by airplane, JFK is only 10 minutes away on the Belt Parkway. Not far from Sheepshead Bay, Gateway National Park, Horseback riding trails, Floyd Bennett Field, Kings Plaza/Gateway Plaza eihter. I would rent first to see I like being out his far before committing to what would no doubt be a long term investment.

  2. You could find a fixer-upper in East Bed Stuy for less than $500K I’d bet. It is legitimately “brownstone brooklyn,” near Bushwick, which can be a good thing, the JMZ is good, relatively easy to buy groceries, go out to eat, etc.

  3. I really don’t know much about Canarsie. But have you checked out Bensonhurst or Dyker Heights? It seems you want to be near brownstone Brooklyn and these areas are much closer. Plus Bensonhurst has some good resturaunts.

  4. I would rather rent then buy something in canarsie. You have more people defaulting on their mortgage then anywhere else in bklyn. This is thanks to al sharpton. I know some people who fled from the area.

Think carefully before buying in the area. Drive around….

  5. I know, I missed Brownstone Brooklyn when I was driving around. But the place was nice and affordable. I actually commute Mon-Thurs for work (around the country). If you know of any places under 500k in Sunset Park, Park Slope, Bay Ridge, etc let me know :). Pretty much impossible!

  6. It’s about as far away from Brownstone Brooklyn as you can get and still live in Brooklyn. I not lived there in decades, so can’t comment on the current quality of life. It is residential. Manhattan is a nice commute away. If you like to fish or boat, Jamaica Bay is close.
