For the past couple of months I have spotted rats outside my neighbor’s house (2 doors down). They seem to be multiplying now (my girlfriend just saw 5 while parking in front of my house). I called 311 and filed a complaint. Do you guys think this will help? What are other things I can do? Suggestions welcomed! Please help.

These rats are the size of cats!

  1. I’m in Philly I have a neighbor with about 20 birdfeeders ,I began to notice rats when I told the neighbor we had a rat problem he denied it said he never saw rats before ,anyhow I then called the city and I was given the citation for rats for some legal reason they are not allowed to go on neighbors property???? The poison the city put out was a short lived cure for my problem..
I again ask the neighbor to stop feeding the birds with no luck,so then I filmed the rats in his yard in his birdfeeders .He then went on a rampage killing the rats and throwing thier dead bodies into my yard while I’m at work .
I’ve had a rat problem once before in my old neighborhood after the initial shock of the word RAT we all got together and eliminated the problem .
People at 1st are in rat denial if your neighbors are sensible they will work together .I would kill 1 or 2 to show the neighbor and try and be friendly but I wouldn’t take any B/s a rat in the house is no joke .Then film the rats and goto the city if the neighbor won’t help .
When I filmed the rats the neighbor took it the wrong way like a threat ,but after being told he saw no rats ,I thought this was a good approach to show him there was a problem .If you do nothing you will have rats everywhere stay on top of this .
Good Luck I was really amased that the neighbor was in total denial and didn’t even care that he was feeding the rats with birdseed and still to this day feeds the birds .

  2. Make sure all holes are filled with cement. You need to stop access.

If the rats are coming from holes along your neighbor’s foundation, talk to your neighbor about cementing them up. If he refuses, ask if you can do it for him. It’s definitely worth spending a few bucks because rats can be a nightmare. . . and it hasn’t even gotten that warm yet!

Of course also call an exterminator and have him visit regularly until the problem has been fixed. He should spray tracking powder into any open holes in the ground as well as use the black boxes with bait that a previous poster mentioned along with additional tracking powder.

Tracking powder is the best because just by running over it, the rats get the stuff in their fur, eventually lick it trying to clean themselves, and subsequently croak.

Most likely your neighbor doesn’t want rats either, so I’d talk to him first about working with you to solve the problem before it gets even worse.

  3. you need those black rat houses. sends the rats away and kills them off. at our condo, we have metal garbage containers, and we have these boxes in each one.
i also periodically put one in my backyard.

look for holes in ground that indicate that they have dug in and created little homes for themselves. – if on your property call an exterminator. I like absolute death.

definitely rat proof your own place ASAP. that means door strips at every door (tack on the inside of your doors, closes the gap between the door and the floor) that goes to either the outside or a communal hallway. block up holes between appliances and the walls.

above posters are correct about digging and renovating old buildings. this was happening a lot a couple of years ago in our hood and we saw rats. for the last year, maybe year and half, seems like they are gone as the construction became complete. the sites usually also try to exterminate.

  4. Rats tend to me more than one persons problem. When you call 311 all you do is get them and YOU fined. The best thing to do is put up a notice that you have seen rats and ask your neighbors to make sure their garbage is put in cans with a lid on them which they keep closed. Also put out some poison. Yes I know some people don’t like to poison rats but that is the only thing that gets them to move on. They are there because there is a food source and no one is killing them. Good luck!

  5. Also, any work the city or ConEd does in digging up the street will likely result inb rats outside instead of back down there. we saw it for a brief period of time on my block.

  6. Why don’t you try talking to your neighbor? All 311 will do is issue a violation. If the neighbors aren’t leaving out loose garbage or debris, then they’re not attracting the rats. Soon the rats will probably be on your property, too.

A more helpful approach in this case is for the neighbors to get together and implement a coordinated setting of traps, blocking of holes, storing garbage in tightly covered metal containers, elimination of water sources, etc.

The Health Department will bill the home owner about $175 just for coming out, yet their visit will do nothing to eliminate the rats.
