Less than a year ago our 4-story building got a new boiler for our steam heat system. This fixed the atrocious banging we had in some risers when the heat turned on.
However, in the last few weeks the banging has started again in one of the risers, again when the boiler turns on early each morning. Is there something we or a plumber could do to fix this problem, without a huge amount of work?

  1. Blow down. Well first get on your knees……

    HARHARHAR!!

Make sure the boiler is off first!

  2. Blow down a float-type low water cut off weekly.
Drain a boiler’s mud leg annually.
Remove and clean a probe-type low water cut off annually.

    That’s it.

  3. sorry to be so vociferous on the post, but in every manual for a steam boiler, be it weil mclain, smith, burnham..the manuals all tell the owner to blow down the boiler weekly during the heating season..isince this is my field i get crazy when i realize that the installer or maintenance guy never told the homeowner that this is a prerequisite nto your boiler lasting 20- 30 year..oy gevalt

  4. Please don’t make ridiculous analogies, eman, I have had great respect for your posts.

I did a casual survey with a few neighbors and friends and none of them had heard of a weekly blowdown (BRG where are you when we need you?) Even wiki answers says once a month. I note no one on this board has said they do it either. I’d really like to know actual figures.

  5. cmu.. you amaze me ..you have a steam boiler serviced once a year and never blow down the boiler on a weekly basis during heating season..that means that rust and sediment will build up inside the boiler clogging every control (low water cutoff. automatic water feed, pressure cut in/ cut out..etc)and cause you emergency service calls when , because you never maintained the system, it will cost you thousands of dollars to get it running again…i guess that you only brush your teeth once a year before you see the dentist as well, since this is the equivalent mind set…
