The boiler in our house was at max pressure but wasnt harnessing it. The PSI remained at 0. It seemed to be wasting energy. So I called in a specialist from Weil-McLain. The guy looked at it and told us it needed to be replaced. Its over 35 years old. I wanted any suggestions on a gas boilers. Our house is 2 duplex’s and a finished basement. Total of 5 livable floors, about 2300 square feet. What kind of boiler should I be looking for? Costs? etc?

Secondly, what should be the monthly cost to heat a house 2,300 SF? I just wanted to see if we really wasting lots of energy.

  1. hello – we are replacing our old steam boiler, that must be at least 30 years old – it cracked. Our usual service company has suggested using Crown boiler as a replacement, since the controls being on the right hand side are preferrable in our space. It was max sized at 172BTU but we decided to go up to 207BTU incase we decide to add an additional radiator. Piping is also being replaced. Question is, does this need to be filed in any way with city/national grid?

  2. way smarter to wait till the end of the heating season…weil mclain, burnham and smith are the preeminent american stem boiler brands… make sure to have all your basement steam pipes in the basement, replce the vents, etc while you are at it

  3. the boiler still works, the house is still warm, its just seems to be wasting a lot of heat!

we plan on making these changes after the winter.

  4. I’m as guilty of this as anyone unless my heating guy makes a regular inspection but 90% of these failures during the cold Winter months are preventable by a yearly maintenance service.
